Nevermind, I did some digging and answered my own question, sort of. The file settings.py should definitely be kept out of a public git repo.
(Please let me know if you are aware of any other files that should also be excluded.)

Ack — discourse didn’t notify me of this new thread and totally missed it! Sorry. :(
I really need to write a post about .gitignore files… will make this a priority. You also don’t need to include your virtualenv files or your database.
